Philly Steaks

Authentic Philly Cheesesteaks in Medellin? Seriously? Having lived a good part of my life in south Jersey, where the Philly Cheesesteak is an institution, I must admit I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about this place.

But I am here to tell you that the Cheesesteaks are excellent. And yes, I can honestly say they are indeed authentic.

The owner, Mike Conte, is an outgoing, friendly guy who lived for a while at the Jersey shore. As such he knows what a real Cheesesteak is supposed to be and to his credit he delivers the goods in Medellin. The steak is sliced thin and grilled perfectly before being stuffed into a soft and chewy oversized hoagie roll and blanketed with whiz (cheese sauce for the uninitiated).

Everything is made to order and you can have whatever variation of the Philly steak sandwich that you desire.

The fries are cooked to a crispy perfection, and if you still have room after your meal you can even have a funnel cake for dessert. I say if you still have room because the portions are HUGE.

The half steak is so big that it has to be cut in two so you can handle it and the order of fries fills a good sized platter. A whole steak sandwich could feed 4 people.

Although a half steak and order of fries would be large enough to fill up 2 people, it was so good that everyone in my party stuffed themselves and finished their order down to the last bite. Share our steaks? Fuggedaboutit! We all left the restaurant satiated and happy. Both the quality and the value of the food were excellent.

If you have a hankering for an authentic Philly Cheesesteak and you can’t get back to the Philadelphia/South Jersey area, or if you’ve always wanted to taste this regional delicacy, give this place a try. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended. “Just sayin”.

One Response to “Philly Steaks”

Must admit, I had my doubts when a friend mentioned trying out this Philly Steak place in the Laureles/Belen area. I responded, are you sure, “Philly Cheese Steaks” in Medellin ?? He insisted he had heard good things and we ventured out. Now, I am not a resident of Philly or South Jersey as my friend who accompanied me there is, but this was a treat.

First off, hats off to Mike (the owner). He could not have been more welcoming as he waited on a couple of locals ordering sandwiches. We had a pleasant conversation while he did his duties on the grill. My friend and the owner hit it off quite well as they are both from the same area of South Jersey. After a few minutes enjoying the beautiful weather, out comes Mike with my sandwich(s).

Presented to me at the table were what looked like the size of two, count em TWO sandwiches that each resembled the size of a footlong Subway Sandwich. I asked, is this a full order which brought some laughter from both Mike and my friend… NO, thats a half. lol.. I was thinking at the moment, no way I can finish this. Well…. the French bread was pleasantly filled with a great combination of beef, mushrooms, a little onion and cheese and was delectable. I destroyed both in mere moments.. lol I will certainly return on my future trips to the City of Eternal Spring. Recommend very highly to anyone… 2 thumbs up !!!
